21st Century President Act

The 21st Century President Act, signed into law on December 27, 2022, amends a single subsection of Title 18 of the U.S. Code to replace gendered terms ('wife', 'widow') with gender-neutral terms ('spouse', 'surviving spouse') in the definition of immediate family for the criminal offense of threatening a former President or their family. The bill originated in the House, passed both chambers with bipartisan support (52 cosponsors, including one Republican), and was signed by The President. There is no funding authorization, appropriation, or any financial mechanism in this bill. It does not create new programs, alter procurement, or affect any private sector activity.
