Boeing snags $75M Pentagon contract for long-range bomb kits at St. Charles plant
Boeing already manufactures joint direct attack munitions (JDAMs) at its local plant. JDAM is a guidance kit that converts existing unguided bombs into precision-guided "smart" munitions with a range of 40 nautical miles.The U.S. Air Force contract announced Aug. 5 is for a turbojet engine kit that converts a 500-pound bomb into a long-range munition called the GBU-75 that can travel over 300 nautical miles. “We think this first contract, which is for low-rate initial production, is a critical step toward what we at Boeing believe through our investments could be a franchise program for us,” a company spokesperson said.
